Richmond Playcentre Fair at Washbourn Gardens

Nelson Anniversary Day traditionally is the timing for the Richmond Playcentre’s fair day at Washbourne Gardens.   This year was no exception and a beautiful sunny Nelson day greeted visitors to the fair.   The gardens where looking beautiful a real credit to the staff who look after them.    Flowers 4 Nelson had a promotional stall at the fair, and we had a great day meeting the locals and visitors to the region and giving out our beautiful business cards, and selling a flower or two.

Gentians and Sunflowers in a ceramic pot arrangement

Lovely blue Gentains and our home grown Amaranthus are both in flower now and we had a stunning arrangement in a ceramic pot on display at the fair with both of these flowers in it.  ( see photo).

Always popular at fair days our “pocket posies” sold well and the pretty pink tones of the arrangements delighted many.   I only had one left which i was able to give to our elderly neighbour for her table.  The flowers i used in them most had not seen before and I name them here for your interest.  the rounded pink balls are Gomphrena and the pink spiky ones are Celsoia ‘Xantippe’,  both of them are also good flowers for drying.pocket posy of flowers

Flowering Potted Hippeastrum

We have good stocks of flowering or in bud Hippeastrum (or better known as Amaryllis).   These are fun to grow with the huge bulbs planted with only the bottom 1/3 of the bulb under the soil, the top part of the bulb is exposed and from it arrow shaped flower buds emerge before any foliage is evident.                      The flowers are large and trumpet shaped and in a wide range of colours.  Native to South America, the bulbs can be grown outdoors in Nelson in areas that have no more than moderate frosts.    Often grown in pots for indoor decoration over their summer flowering period.  Hippeastrums like a well drained soil with plenty of compost.  The strap shaped leaves appear after the bulbs have flowered.    To order one for yourself or a friend go to the potted plant section of this web site.                       Amaryllis potted flowering plant

Box Arrangements

Box arrangements are the best option for sending to hospital or people who are sick at home, as they wont need to worry about finding a vase because these arrangements come complete with water filled foam inside the box. All the person recieving them needs to do is place the box down where they want it.
Once every two or three days depending on how warm the days are; carefully add about half a cup of cold water to the centre of the arrangement.

A country occasion

What a beautiful day it was out at Neudorf winery for the fair day ‘A country Occasion’ the sun was out the wind was absent and hundreds turned up to wonder around the stalls in the beautiful country gardens at the winery. Our site’s view across the vineyards and hops to the distant Nelson Ranges was superb.

The Flowers 4 Nelson stall looked beautiful and several of the visitors took photos of the arrangements on the tables and the stall in general. We gave out about 200 of our business cards, and the feed back from everyone was very complementary. It was fun to meet new people and to greet old friends as they passed the Flowers 4 Nelson stall.

Everyone we spoke to was having a really enjoyable day in the pleasant atmosphere and surroundings.
Around $20,000 was raised for the Nelson Child Cancer Foundation.
Thankyou Upper Moutere and Tim and Judy for hosting such a wonderful event. Carl

New Zealand Profesional Florists Inc. Conferance

The NZPF conferance was held in Nelson at the weekend, this was also the 80th birthday celebrations for the NZPF.
Debra Kinnaird from Christchurch was the guest designer, and gave a fun demonstration of some of the techniques she uses in floristry. Beautiful living handbags made from decorative wire and covered in moss, with accents of twisted witchhazel stems and beautiful calla lilies.
Debra told us she loves wiring, and next showed us how she made a stunning necklace, with decorative wire and incorporating balls of moss and fresh flower material.
Not finished with the wire yet, Debra showed us how she constructs a barrel from decorative wire, to be used as a wedding bouquet. Strands of wire splashed with beads and succulents were draped over and wired to the construction; as were curved stems of calla lily and long stems of the string of pearls succulent.

Saturday night the conferance dinner held at Trailways Restaurant was a time to relax and chat over a delicious meal and a glass of wine. Many stories from past events the group has held came to be shared.

I entered the competion to construct a `Piece Of Cake’ in the theme of the 80th birthday celebrations, which was a fun thing to do. (see photo)

All in all an interesting and informative event; well done to the committee.
